Best friends are the ones you can always count on. They are always there to help you, to laugh with you, cry with you and fulfill even your craziest demands. That was just the case with Kevin Elliot, a British soldier, and his best friend Barry Delaney. The two made a pact before Kevin was shipped to Afghanistan. Namely, In case that Kevin got killed in the war, Barry was to wear the ugliest possible dress to his friend’s funeral.
The British are known for their dark sense of humor so this request from Elliot came as no surprise. Yet, none of the two friends could have imagined that three years later, this joke would turn into a harsh and devastating reality.
When his best friend lost his life in Afghanistan, Delaney didn’t hesitate to honor his fallen pal the way they had agreed many years earlier. He drank a lot of Kevin’s favorite drink and found the ugliest dress he could. Barry put it on together with neon pink socks and made a toast to the hero his friend had been.
Although the ugly dress and neon socks weren’t quite an appropriate attire for a funeral, the display of friendship and loyalty touched everyone’s hearts. Everyone gathered knew about the two friends’ pact and it made the funeral even more heartbreaking.
What Delaney demonstrated was a true greatness – to rise above your grieving and pain and fulfill your promise. He might have lost a bit of his dignity, but he proved to be a true and loyal friend.
If this heartbreaking story moved you, share it with your friends. Remind them about the true meaning of the word friendship.
